Great ShakeOut
Millions of people in the U.S. live and work in earthquake-prone areas, where a major quake could cause unprecedented damage—not just locally, but to the entire country’s economy. What we do now, before an earthquake hits, will determine how well we survive and recover.
Each year, the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills engage millions worldwide through outreach programs, media, and partnerships with hundreds of organizations. The drill takes place annually on the third Thursday of October—this year, International ShakeOut Day falls on October 17. However, participants can hold their drills on any other day of the year as well.
A key feature of the ShakeOut is its integration of science-based earthquake research and decades of social science insights on preparedness. This creates a “teachable moment” similar to experiencing a real earthquake, often sparking increased interest in getting ready. ShakeOut drills generate the urgency needed for individuals, organizations, and communities to prepare, practice safety protocols, and refine emergency plans.
It’s not just any drill—it’s a community-wide effort. Each organization, city, or group can customize it to make it their own.
To participate, visit ShakeOut.org/register and register your family, school, business, or organization to join the drill. Those participants will receive resources to help plan and involve others. At the very least, practice the recommended protective actions at ShakeOut.org/dropcoverholdon. It’s a one-minute commitment that could save your life.
And beyond this recognized day of preparation, GeoVera reminds you to consider covering your home for Earthquake damage. The standard homeowners insurance policy does not do this. You will need a separate, stand alone Earthquake policy from a trusted company like QuakeInsurance by GeoVera to financially survive a large-scale event. Talk to your agent or go online to quote.
